Glucosamine is a naturally occurring amino monosaccharide and a precursor for proteoglycan synthesis. It stimulates chondrocytes to produce proteoglycans with normal polymer structures, enhances the repair capacity of chondrocytes, and inhibits cartilage-damaging enzymes such as collagenase and phospholipase A2. It also prevents the formation of superoxide free radicals that damage cells, thereby promoting the repair and reconstruction of the cartilage matrix. As a result, glucosamine can slow the pathological progression of osteoarthritic pain, improve joint mobility, and relieve discomfort. Evidence for glucosamine sulfate is robust, with consistent recommendations from major domestic and international core journals. It is considered a foundational therapy for the long-term management of osteoarthritis.
